Kilfenora, the 'city of the crosses', was a large Irish medieval monastic establishment founded in the sixth century. The round tower is found throughout Ireland and was built for defensive purposes, in the event of invading Vikings. The excellent state of the majority of tower remains testify to the solid construction and design of these amazing artefacts. Picture courtesy Rory McEvoy.
