July 2003: Guinness branch

This is track on the old bed of the Guinness branch of the Grand Canal, long filled in. The view is looking towards the Davitt bridge direction. Note the high fencing. At the time of construction this was a deprived area of Dublin, particularly the Fatima Mansion local authority flats. Since Luas was completed, Fatima Mansions were demolished and the area is slowly being regenerated with Luas as one of the flagship projects. It is somewhat ironic that this part of the route was second choice - originally the planners wanted to go through Inchicore village but the local traders' association made strong objections. The present route is parallel and, apart from the tight curves around St James's hospital, far quicker than negotiating Inchicore village.
