Hardebeck Avenue: Carl Hardebeck (1869-1945)

Carl Hardebeck was born in London to a German father and Welsh mother. He moved to Belfast in his 20s and eventually became Professor of Irish Music at University College Cork. Despite loosing his sight as a child, he was extremely important in the revival of Irish music in Ireland in the earlier twentieth century. He is unusual in the selection of people commemorated in the Walkinstown "Musical Roads" scheme in that he had no Irish connections by birth or family but, like Michele Esposito, was drawn to Ireland and subsequently made a massive contribution to musical life there.
