Count John McCormack (1884-1945)
Despite having the longest surname of the musicians, John McCormack's street name includes his first name and he was hugely influential as a Tenor. He was born in Athlone in the middle of Ireland, and following lessons from Vincent O'Brien, was then taught by maestro Sabatini in Milan. McCormack became famous throughout the world, and best known for his operatic roles as well as for his superb rendition of 19th century art song. Of note in the street sign is the spelling of "SheƔin", rather than the more usual "Sean". My piano teacher, Gerard Shanahan, who was born in Limerick and worked for a long time in the Limerick School of Music, once accompanied McCormack on one of his American tours.
