isolde tristan medieval tower dublin irish maid temple bar viking

The building at the turn of the road is built over Isolde's Tower, turret of the city wall and named after Celtic mythological princess, Isolde. This is the same as Wagner's opera heroine who is taken to marry King Mark but tragically falls in love with his henchman Tristan.

The original street level was considerably lower but you can see the remains of Isolde's tower through the designer grille pattern which resembles the tower. This site is well worth a visit and is at the western end of Temple Bar, very near the Viking centre.
